MEET BRITTANY DIEGO FORBES 30 UNDER 30 LA BASED CELEBRITY FASHION STYLIST
Meet BRITTANY DIEGO Forbes 30 Under 30 LA Based celebrity stylist whose work has been featured at red-carpet events like the Oscars and Emmys, Diego was flooded with requests for career advice from aspiring stylists. Having experienced firsthand the lack of resources and mentorship in the industry due to the competitive nature of the business, she decided to launch her then-blog, Fashion Mentor, in 2018.
The blog has since evolved into a career-development platform with an annual Stylist Summit, YouTube channel, podcast, and online courses where students have gone on to have their work featured on Oprah's OWN network, Samsung, MTV, countless red carpets, and fashion magazine covers. Her most recent role is that of published author of her book, "The Fashion Stylist Blueprint" (available on Amazon).
What keeps you motivated?: “The endless possibilities of success! I moved to the US at a young age and my family sacrificed a lot for me to be able to pursue my dreams of being in fashion so doing what I can to show them that it was all worth it is a big motivating factor for me.”
Three goals Diego dreams of are: Spending an entire year traveling the world, retiring her mom and taking her hands-on educational styling classes on tour to different cities. Some places she would like to visit along the way to her travels include Italy (Florence, Milan, Venice, Positano, Lake Como, Rome) Paris, France and
Ghana
What do you like to do in your spare time?: “In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with close friends, catching up on life, and trying new restaurants together. I also love visiting museums, it's a must in every city I visit and reading (autobiographies and personal development are my favorite genres).”
What would you like people to remember about you?: “I want people to remember me for being a positive influence and supporting them in achieving their biggest dreams/goals.”
What is one message you would like to give your fans or supporters?: “That the images on your vision board will stay a vision if you don't put in the work to make it your reality.”
What is your favorite place to eat?: “My favorite place is The Blue Hole Restaurant Belizean Caribbean Cuisine in Gardena (A small neighborhood in LA).”
What is your superpower?: “Empathy and listening. People are always so surprised that I remember things about them like where they come from, that they have a twin, random bits of info. Don't tell me anything you don't want me to remember lol.”
If your life were a theme song, name the title: “Dream it, Work hard, Grind 'til I own it.”
Where did you grow up?: “I was born in the small Central American country of Belize but I moved to the US at a young age and grew up in Los Angeles.”
Were you a good student?: “Absolutely, immigrant kids don't have a choice. I was on every Dean's List, Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance you name it.”
What significant challenges have you had to overcome?: “Mostly people not believing in me and underestimating me. When I first became a stylist I didn't (and still don't) go all out with my outfits, I got mistaken for someone's assistant often and I don't really know how to describe it it's just this feeling when I would say I wanted to be in fashion and I could just sense that people didn't believe I could do it.
Then when I started my business Fashion Mentor I definitely did not get support- one stylist asked me why I was "giving away the keys". But fast forward to now, all of those same people that doubted me are saying they are proud of me (*side eye*). I quickly learned in business that most people won't support you until they see other people supporting you and it's unfortunate but that's the truth.”
What is your creative process like?: “I don't force anything, I like to let things flow as much as possible. When I'm styling I like to be collaborative with my client; I'm not the type of stylist to demand my client wears something. Above all, I want them to feel comfortable and confident. But if I feel strongly about something I will stand firm and vocalize it.”
What are your plans for the future and what do you hope to accomplish next?: “To continue growing my company, Fashion Mentor, and take my stylist trainings international. So far all of my in-person stylist classes have been held in LA and people have flown in from Canada, the Caribbean, Puerto Rico, and all over the US to attend. However, I would love to take my classes on the road to inspire and teach more aspiring stylists how to make their career goals come true because nothing is better than getting paid to do what you love!”
Who would you like to collaborate with?: “Law Roach and Arian Simone”
