The Catrina Gala
The Catrina Gala
Purpose of catrina gala
An event to memorialize and give thanks to a special holiday in San Antonio. Dia De Los Muertos goes back to “the Aztec Empire's influence extended throughout present-day Mexico and Central America.” From makeup retouches at the Neiman Marcus booth to a silent phone auction! We gave thanks to this beautiful culture every way we knew how from donations to dances. The Catrina Gala was yet another hit and keeps getting bigger! Hosted in the San Antonio Public Library. I attended as a plus one by my very good friend and hairstylist, Matthew from Bixa Hair Studios. The opportunity to see this luxurious evening for myself makes me want to go back every year! The Catrina Gala is a spooky fundraiser, encouraged to dress up. I wore a subtly painted sugar skull on my face with a collared shirt and velvet dress pants with studded loafers and angel wings. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness, respect, appreciation, and to have fun while doing it! I hope to see more creative, luxurious costumes for the next Catrina Gala! Admission is difficult to obtain as this is still a fundraiser featuring a silent-phone auction and displayed art. It’s a perfect place to meet and greet people and the best part is that they’re mostly local! Walking around in my costume I was scouted by the wonderfully wholesome Jose, showing interest in me as a model for his modeling agency located in San Antonio. I met the gracious and gorgeous Gavrial, interviewed by Univision! The Spanish media recognized the event as transformative and honorable! Outside of the library was free to enter! There were children dressed in the traditional dia de los muertos outfits dancing around, handing out flowers to those that were outside. The San Antonio Public Library Foundation says this event is essential, “To raise essential funds for the Library Foundation to continue our mission of strengthening the library in service to our community and giving a generous gift to the library system from the event proceeds. In 2018, we gifted $50,000 to the Central Library’s Latino Collection & Resource Center for programming initiatives!”
